The Multiverse is old - far older than any single species or being that inhabits it. The Eternals exist, formed at the behest of the Creator, to watch over a changing multiverse. But before that - long before the time of the Eternals, the Void Wars, or recorded history were the '''Old Gods'''. The Old Gods, of which the entity known as [[The Creator]] was one of the most powerful (or ''the'' most powerful) were mysterious beings that transcended the common concept of being 'alive'. It is as though they were thoughts, ideas, or concepts given life and persona. Traveling through the multiverse at their whim, they became archetypical figures in the myths and spiritual beliefs of countless races. The relations between the Old Gods - their friendships, feuds, creations, and deeds - moved the multiverse itself. The Old Gods were often reckoned based not on any sort of moral or ethical alignment, but on other scales. Some had the power to create, while some had only the power to destroy - this was one of the great classifiers. The most important aspect, though, was that of order and chaos. Inherent in the works of every Old God was a congruent design that either facilitated pattern and stability, increasing order, or fostered diversity and random iteration, increasing entropy and suggesting disorder. The multiverse thrived, growing, being pruned, and growing again based on this harmonious balance of the workings of the Old Gods. For reasons none today know, the majority of the Old Gods died - that is to say, became incorporeal - before the time of the Eternals. Some stayed around living lives less in the spotlight; some even aided and lived with the Eternals for a time, as though to help them get their bearings for their daunting work. By the time the first tournament in recent record - [[Survivor I]] - was held, none of the Old Gods remained, save [[Id]] (whose fate is recorded in the events of [[Rurouni Taikai II]]). The history of the time of the Old Gods still remains largely obfuscated. The best attempt at exploring this ancient time was the research and writing of famed Eternal scholar [[Millon M'Tai]], whose collected works on the history of the Eternals - and as much as he could discover about the time before them - are archived in the great library of the Eternal City. Still, some of the best references are the old stories, legends, songs, and poems that mention these mysterious and powerful beings. Who were all of the Old Gods? Where did they come from? How did they become so powerful? What was the multiverse like in their time? Why did they begin to disappear from history? A study of the Old Gods would likely garner far more questions than answers, but it is through the great desire to know the unknown that one day, more about the Old Gods may be revealed.
